Storytelling Week 9

Opperation Overlord
Rama in the cold and bitter sea wash. Rama climbed down the rope ladder and into his PT-Landing craft. The sea rocking his landing craft back and forth. Rama stood amongst his fellow brothers as the boat departed. Waiting for the ramp to drop and storm the beaches, Rama could not help but think of his fate that he might encounter as he heard the violent shelling of the United States Navy. The 352 Vali infantry was unleashing an incredible hellfire of machine-gun rounds and mortars. Striking all around them the shrapnel bouncing off the hull of Rama's landing craft. Rama stood there gripping his rifle and shared a look with Yama. This look they exchanged was of pride but hidden right behind it was fear. The boat captain called out "two minutes!". Rama and Yama knew the moment was approaching. They felt the boat hit the beach and the ramp to the boat dropped. The second the ramp dropped the Vali unleashed machine-gun fire into the boat. Rama watched as his boat mates were shot down, Rama leaped out of the side of the landing craft. Rama sank to the bottom of the shallow sea with his heavy pack. Yama reached down and pulled Rama up and yelled "move up the beach Rama, we can't stay here"! The two sprinted up the beach and ducked behind a hedge hog as bullets and sand popped off all around him. Rama grasped his rifle and his commander sprinted up and told them "move up to the sea wall and great ready to charge". Rama moved from cover to cover as he approached the the sea wall, mortars and rounds hitting all around him. Appearing that the only thing that was protecting him was luck. Rama dove for the sea wall and awaited for the engineer to blow the wire so they could advance into the concrete bunkers and attack the Vali infantry. Rama laid there waiting for the defenses to be blown. Seconds later the engineer slid the explosives in and yelled "fire in the hole"! The defenses were defeated and Rama ran full tilt through the opening as the Vali's fired into their charge. Rama and his unit regrouped out side of the opening to the first bunker they approached. Rama peaked around the corner and saw the three Vali infantry standing in there with their hands up showing they had surrendered. Rama in a moment of fear unloaded his weapon into the bunker killing all three of the soldiers. His unit looked at Rama in a state of disbelief. Rama had acted dishonorably in the heat of war but in that moment for a new and scared solider he had acted. The unit agreed that they were all combative and they continued on to the next bunker clearing defenses slowly.

Author Notes:

This tells the story of Vali's Death through Operation Overloard commonly referred to as the "D-Day invasions of Normandy". Just as Rama and Vali fought bloodied and violent. Looking at the "sneaky" and cunning tactics that Rama pulled by launching that dart at Vali we can see that "dart" as the overwhelming forces employeed on the beaches to fight back the forces along the atlantic wall.

  1. Hi David, this retelling of the battle between Rama and Vali is an intense and incredibly unique story! I think you did a great job of encompassing the emotions Rama experienced as he prepared to storm the beach while remaining true to the original story. The only thing I saw to change was the title of the story has a slight misspelling! Otherwise, I really enjoyed the reimagining!

  2. Hi David!
This is a wonderful historical rendition of Vali’s Death in the Ramayana. It is interesting that the excuse for the dishonorable act in your story is that Rama is a new soldier and panicked, whereas Rama in the Ramayana was a relatively experienced and honorable warrior. When I read this story in the Ramayana the first time, I didn’t really understand why it was dishonorable, possibly because wars aren’t typically fought face to face these days. With your story, the opposite is true where I would struggle to find Rama’s action honorable at all.

  3. Hi David,

You did a great job putting two older concepts together for your rendition. I like how you based the your story off of Rama and Vali's fight and incorporated a historical twist by introducing D-Day invasions of Normandy. Also, touching base on what Wumbologist commented, I noticed the spelling error in "operation." Overall, great job! I look forward to reading more renditions by you.

I love the historical aspects you put into your stories, it makes it entertaining to read. I think the way you are able to describe the scenes in your story give me the ability to visualize what is going on. Overall, really great job with this story.
